The Thicker Blood of Brotherhood

In Poetry on April 5, 2012 at 5:50 pm

And the bad blood gave way
To the thicker blood of brotherhood:
Chromosomes stained the same
In the historical spray of wounds
Between them,
And when each brought his anger
Down to reflection,
The red on their shirts glistened
In the mirror with their own
Past and posterity,
And the bad blood gave way
To a slow coagulation of
Unspoken hurt,
And it laid there raw in a scar
That closed an eye but
Not forgotten, only tempered by
The thicker blood of brotherhood.
