Speech Sounds

In Poetry on March 31, 2012 at 11:26 pm

The babble of a foreign tongue:
It’s a song of cadences,
Clipped accents,
Vowelous ululation,
Sound.
Does English have a sound?
Surely! Though your ears
Can’t hear its birdsong anymore,
For its sounds are speech
And its waves of acoustic
Pound against your drums
Not as ends but as means
To phrases of meaning
Sailed across the medium
Of air in a functional capsule:
Speech sounds,
Where the first word
Corrugates the second
Into segments, where
The whole scope
Of sound alone
Is unheard
And
Unhearable
